Anne McCaffrey has a few small fantasy books which have almost a McKinley
feel to them:
An Exchange of Gifts
No One Noticed the Cat
If Wishes Were Horses
For science fiction, C.J. Cherryh's "The Pride of Chanur" is my favorite.
Her Morgaine books are a cross between sf and fantasy.
