Dianna Wynne Jones has also written the Crestomanci quartet, which is a
somewhat humorous series of children's books about witches. I'd also
second the suggestion about A College of Magics.

p.s. Was Which Witch by Eva Ibbotson? I keep wanting to read that book but
never got the chance....
