McKinley: faerie tales vs. folktales

just a random question only indirectly related to robin: someone - margaret
atwood? - made a distinction between faerie tales and folk tales in that
faerie tales are taken literally, are believed, only by children, whereas
folktales are believed, are taken literally, not only by children but by
their native tellers(in somewhat the same way superstitions are believed).
do you all think this is an accurate distinction, or too generalized, or...?
