they know there's something down there b/c when they drilled down in the pit
the drill came back with some gold/precious metal on it, and also some
parchment. they also sent a video camera down there and it showed a skeleton,
perhaps of someone left down there to "guard" the treasure! also, someone
went through all the trouble to construct the amazingly complex/difficult to
engineer water-traps to protect Something, unless they just had a really
weird sense of humor...
