In response to Clara's message, I think the reason Jack was so unpleasant was because he was mad at Jeweltounge for choosing a baker (or whatever he was) over him. It seems too me he was trying to scare her as a sort of "payback", because he knew she was worried about Beauty and didn't buy the family's story about where she was.
