rows or atlatls were used in generalized activity and in hunting, so even the simpler Chichimecs could acquire those skills, but the macuahuitl was used for warfare only by specialists, and Chichimecs were unlikely to master it. There were relatively few technological options available, and Aztec innovations were largely organizational. Even in this area, however, advances were not extensive. The major organizational development was in logistics, which permitted the prosecution of war at a great distance. But the Aztecs also pioneered the unprecedented reliance on naval capacity, which enabled them to wage extensive warfare within the basin of Mexico and to integrate the region. But both the substance and the amplitude of the offensive-defensive cycle were muted in Mesoamerica. |
