To Cheryl, re movie casting

With respect to Persuasion, I think it was the same thing of the actors just not being what I expected. In the recent production of Pride and Prejudice, I remember thinking that Jennifer Ehle wasn't what I had imagined for Elizabeth, but she really grew into the role and was very convincing. Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth have always been my favourite Austen characters - all that smouldering, suppressed passion and devotion. His letter to her declaring his undying love gets me everytime. Hence, in the movie version, Amanda Root seemed too subdued for me. Too tired, too dowdy - looking as if she wasn't capable of loving that deeply. Ciaran Hinds as Wentworth was also a bit of a letdown for me because he was a little old, a little cold.... a little something.

A Robin McKinley book would be the same only harder. Science fiction is hard enough but a mythological/fantasy land would be incredibly hard. Done badly it would look ridiculous with people cavorting around in silly costumes doing improbable things. I think the best place for a Robin McKinley movie is in my mind. =) Similar discussions take place on the Georgette Heyer mailing list and I'm constantly thinking: 'No way'. *grin*
Cheers
